Portraits Beyond Likeness.

Contemporary Figurative & Portrait Painter in London

Nicholas A. Ferguson is a London-based contemporary painter working under the name Atelier NAF. His work spans figurative painting, portraiture, and concept-driven series exploring identity, perception, and the emotional complexity of human experience.

Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Ferguson develops intuitively driven bodies of work that investigate atmosphere, memory, and inner states. His paintings move between observational portraiture and more introspective figurative works, often using the human figure as a way of exploring presence, character, and psychological depth.

Icons of London
Nicholas’s current project, Icons of London, is an ongoing portrait series celebrating the individuals who shape the cultural fabric of the city. Through painted portraits, the project aims to create a living archive of London — from well-known cultural figures to the personalities who define its streets, communities, and creative life.

Each portrait develops through conversation, observation, and time spent with the sitter, allowing the work to move beyond surface likeness and towards something more atmospheric and revealing of the individual’s story.

Across this series and his wider collections, Ferguson’s paintings invite viewers to look beyond appearance and encounter the deeper emotional and psychological dimensions of being human.

Exploring what it means to be human through paint.

I believe imagination expressed through art can expand how we see ourselves and the world around us.

I explore identity and the emotional landscape of being human.
